The Story Behind The Blend
I’m Tony Cox, and the Tonix Oil story has its roots (if you’ll pardon the pun) in my 30+ years as a hair stylist in the salon and spa industry. It’s not just about me though – it’s also about the people I’ve met along the way, and still meet daily, doing the job I love. And it’s about you too, even if our paths have never crossed until now. But as I don’t know your story, and you don’t know me from Adam, here’s a potted history to bring you up to date…
When I was first starting out as a fledgling hairdresser, I had no idea where that journey would take me. But it’s been a fun ride and I’ve come a long way since then, via London, New York, San Francisco and LA. During that time I’ve gone from salon employee to salon owner; from novice to educator; and I’ve met a lot of wonderful clients, co-workers and friends. I even had a stint working with supermodels and Hollywood stars; one moment behind the scenes at a fashion show, then on pop videos, TV shows, movie sets and best of all backstage at the Oscars. Looking back, it all seems kind of surreal.
It’s tempting to say I wouldn’t change a thing, but then I’d be kidding myself. What I wasn’t to know back then was that my dream job was gradually making me ill. Headaches, nausea, burning sensations in my eyes, nasal passages and on my hands – symptoms that developed and only worsened over time. It turned out that I was suffering ‘toxic overload’ from the chemicals I was working with on a daily basis. Suddenly I faced the very real prospect of having to give up my career in order to reclaim my health.
Fortunately, this cloud had a silver lining. It came at a time of increasing awareness about the harmful long-term effects of external toxins on people and the environment. I found myself becoming a champion for organic beauty products almost overnight. Products containing ammonia and formaldehyde no longer had a place in my salon – I had to think about not just my own health, but the wellbeing of my employees, customers and the world outside the window.
There are still many of these harmful products out there, from fragrances to preservatives, in salons and homes worldwide, and people are still getting sick. Tonix Oil is my own personal ‘antidote’ that I’ve put a lot of thought and care into: a multi-purpose, all-natural, non-toxic oil for hair, skin and nails. In many ways I wish such a product had been around at the very start of my career. Luckily I was able to make the switch to organic at just the right time. It hasn’t affected my livelihood, and I feel like I’m giving something back to the profession.
